"It's sure beautiful today, don't you think?"

In most places around the world bringing up the weather is usually a conversation starter, and nothing more. It is often used to warm up with something non-confrontational and where good and bad are near universally agreed upon. The conversation is almost always about the weather at hand, with a prediction about whether or not rain is in the forecast for the weekend.



Where we are living now when someone brings up the weather its time to buckle down and put on your thinking cap because "the weather" is hardly a simple and polite conversational topic. Be prepared to talk about the air temp, water temp, swell size, swell direction, tides, wind (offshore & onshore), fetch, wave period....etc. Also, since the surf conditions change hourly be prepared to discuss predictions over the following hours and days based a wide variety of factors.

The funny thing is that the weather is so ridiculously good that a "normal" weather conversation would be a complete non-starter.

"Great weather isn't it?"
yep.
"I heard it is going to be great this weekend as well."
yep.
"It might rain tomorrow for a bit, and then be gloriously sunny for the rest of the day."
yep.

I guess people need something to complain about with regard to the weather. Since it is incredibly rare to be faced with a bad weather day they feel the need to complain about whether or not the waves are firing at the local surf spot.
