Settlers of Catan

I have always been a fan of boardgames, card cames...etc. This winter Kristina gave me a game called "Settlers of Catan." I had heard about it a few years ago since it is very popular, especially in Germany, and has won numerous awards. Over the last few weeks we were able to play a number of games and I have been really impressed. The game seems to have a surprisingly broad appeal. We are currently visiting my parents in WA and my parents love it, along with Kristina and my sister.

There are number of things that the designer really got right, that sets Settlers apart from other similar boardgames:

  • Everyone is involved during each persons turn since all parties could be affected.
  • The game is not directly adversarial, though indirectly players must react to the moves of others.
  • Unlike other games of strategy, playing a game lasts less than an hour once you become familiar with the rules.
  • The dynamics of the game, specifically the "robber," ensure that it is very difficult to run away with a game even when the comparative skill levels are wide.
  • The game provides a good blend of strategy and randomness
  • The strategies can be relatively complex adding to the long term playability of the game.
  • Because trade is so important a lot of strategy and fun involves interactions with the other players.

Considering that last night my mom promised a win and delivered a commanding victory we will be playing Settlers for a long to come.

We love Settlers too. I think that is the only game we have paid full price for. It is way too addicting. It's a lot more fun when you have 3 or more people playing though.

Austin got that game last year for Christmas and we love it, too. This year I bought him Carcassonne, which is good for when you only have two players (it can also be played with more). It's not as complex as Settlers but still fun.

I'm kind of amazed at how often you get to see your (Alan's) parents in Washington. Do you drive or fly? Oh, to be in driving distance of anyone we know! Ha ha. At least my mom is here now. I would move to WA in a heartbeat if we could. Such a great climate and boundless outdoor opportunities.

Thank goodness for blogs. It's good to keep up with you guys.

we LOVE it, too. we just got it and were up until 3am a few weekends ago with my mom and dad and micah's bro and his wife playing (with the extension kit). if you like settlers, you'd love ticket to ride (involves building trains across europe)!! we have some friends here who are really into board games, which has been so fun for us.

now we have the wii so we can take a turn with game night at our house. after the kids go to bed--the guitar hero in our home comes out!! micah is mildly obsessed.

wish we lived closer so we could play. now that you're back on the west coast, a trip to our neck of the woods would be fun.
