A Bicentenial to Remember

Welcome to 2008!

On this day, 200 years ago a law went into effect in the U.S. barring the importation of slaves. The cessation of slavery is an amazing event in human history. Slavery was one of the earliest and cruelest institutions among men. Some two hundred years ago people in the UK and the U.S., inspired by Christian teachings and Philosophers such as Francis Hutchenson came to the conclusion that everyone is equal under god and deserving of a number of basic human rights. Chief among these is a right to be free.

It is truly an amazing event. Consider that this change of thought went against the thoughts and actions in almost all cultures for Millenniums. A good article can be found here.

How lucky we are to live in this country and at this time.

Happy New Year!
