Roaring Camp Railroad
On the last day of our camping trip we went over to the Roaring Camp Railroad.
Here's Ethan's famous squinty-eyed smile.
And Amara staring up at the redwoods in apparent wonderment.
Here's the train going over a trestle bridge.
We had a short intermission at the top and learned about how redwoods have fireproof bark, and that if lightening hits a redwood, the moisture inside it will get so hot it will explode from the inside. Alan got wide - eyed and said, "cool!"

It wasn't just get "hot and explode" it was instantaneous boil and explode!
It was also interesting in that he explained that due to environmentalists the redwoods are dying because no fires have been allowed to pass through. The fire is needed for the sustained growth of the redwood forests and environmental groups have fought to ensure that no fires were allowed to burn, and likewise no controlled burns.
